KIA has signed an official agreement with The Dutch non-profit organization "The Ocean Cleanup" to create a partnership for sustainable development. As a starting point, KIA will use "The innovative technology"to clean up and collect plastic waste in the ocean, and establish a "Resource Circulation system" for KIA's vehicle production and reuse, thus taking a solid step toward a sustainable future.
The Ocean Cleanup, as a non-profit organization, is committed to protecting the ecosystem by developing a system to clean up floating plastic in the Pacific Ocean, and collecting garbage from rivers by itself through an unmanned barge called "Interceptor", so as to curb plastic pollution to the ocean.
KIA plans to support "The Ocean Cleanup" project for the next seven years. Specifically, KIA will provide "The Ocean Cleanup"with the steel needed to build a barge, as well as four eco-friendly electric vehicles and associated operating expenses for the non-profit organization, and plastic recycled from the ocean will be reused in the production of KIA vehicles.
At the same time, in order to practice sustainable development, KiIA plans to increase the use of renewable plastics in its vehicles to more than 20 percent by 2030. In addition, in order to minimalize the impact on the climate when disposing of abandoned vehicles, KIA will establish and launch a "Virtuous Recycling Loop" to increase the reuse of used batteries and plastics, and further contribute to environmental protection.
